This young man did a great job. I don't think actual expansion plans are made based on the results of data analysis. Rather, I believe it's almost entirely about money but - still - great job.
To get to the alignment aspect: This project resulted in the MLB expanding to 32 with Raleigh, North Carolina and San Jose, California. If that were the case, how would MLB align?
I would guess the league would do its best to put 1 new franchise in each the AL and NL and avoid shifting teams between the AL and NL. A 2x4x4 setup is where I landed.
American League
Central: Houston Astros, Kansas City Royals, Minnesota Twins, Texas Rangers
East: Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays
North: Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Guardians, Detroit Tigers, Toronto Blue Jays
West: Las Vegas Athletics, Los Angeles Angels, San Jose Expansion, Seattle Mariners
National League
Central: Chicago Cubs, Colorado Rockies, Milwaukee Brewers, St. Louis Cardinals
East: Atlanta Braves, Miami Marlins, Raleigh Expansion, Washington Nationals
North: Cincinnati Reds, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates
West: Arizona Diamondbacks, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants
My preference would be to realign geographically:
Eastern Conference
Atlantic: Baltimore Orioles, Pittsburgh Pirates, Toronto Blue Jays, Washington Nationals
Mideast: Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Guardians, Detroit Tigers
Northeast: Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies
Southeast: Atlanta Braves, Miami Marlins, Raleigh Expansion, Tampa Bay Rays
Western Conference
Central: Colorado Rockies, Houston Astros, Kansas City Royals, Texas Rangers
Midwest: Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers, Minnesota Twins, St. Louis Cardinals
Pacific: Las Vegas Athletics, San Francisco Giants, San Jose Expansion, Seattle Mariners
Southwest: Arizona Diamondbacks, Los Angeles Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres
