Just got a phone call from my friend who is a supervisor with DHS. He just got home from DC for the first time since the election.
I asked him if they were busy shredding papers. He laughed and said it’s a whole new world there. His boss is worried and he reports directly to Mayorkas.
He said they have stopped all construction.
He said DHS is shutting down the hotels they have been housing illegals in since 2021. They’re shutting them down because the illegals are heading south with their backpacks.
When I asked if they were heading home, he said reports were they were leaving cities, moving to rural areas.
I said there was no way we were going to get all of them out. He agreed and said the plan they’ve been told will be to go after the criminals, those with records. He said their hope is some will leave voluntarily.
When my friend leaves after Thanksgiving, he doesn’t expect to be back home until Christmas.

What your friend told you definitely tracks. Tom Homan said they're going after the illegals who are convicted criminals and gang members once the Second Trump Administration begins, if I remember correctly.
You can do a lot deporting for free. Stop paying illegals any benefits. Make it impossible to hire them. Dont give illegals drivers licenses. Without the economic benefit---many will leave on their own.
Then---incentivize self deportation. Anyone who self deports is eligible in one year to re-apply and attempt to legally immigrate to the US via the Trump stay in Mexico system. You can even provide some cash and bus ride to get them headed into Mexico. Then make it clear anyone who fails to self-deport and is apprehended and deported by US authorities is permanently barred from legal re-entry. You have 90 days to self deport from announcement date. That will get rid of many more. Many of those remaining will concentrate in sanctuary cities---which makes it easy to round up large numbers efficiently. Taking those steps is low hanging fruit that will allow millions to be deported with minimal expense.

Punish companies and their individual management team that employ illegals or pay contractors that do.
Fine individual homeowners who hire illegals to be contractors.

I think some sort of fine, etc. makes sense. I loathe all aspects if civil forfeiture, where you can lose your nest egg without ever being charged with a crime, and it takes years, and much expense to hopefully get it back. I CF to go away, but am in complete support for punishing those that harbor illegals, both for real estate and business purposes.

Make it hurt if you break the law.
The employers part makes sense, but I don't favor the homeowner idea. I don't want homeowners asking for and checking papers every time they get someone to cut their grass.

You don't have to check papers.
If they are asking to be paid in cash they are not paying taxes. Illegals don't accept checks to their LLC for the painting project or roof or concrete they are doing.
Go into any Home Depot today and you'll see bunches of them buying materials for underbid, unpermitted cash jobs. Projects that they underbid legitimate companies for. Legitimate companies with commercial insurance policies and licenses and Worker's Comp. pay taxes so that they can employ American citizens.
Homeowners know. They just try to save money. They are part of the problem. Hold them accountable, too. Just a threat of getting fined-penalized out the Wazoo for paying these guys under the table will dry most of it up.
Stop the flow of under the table money and lots will self deport.

Unfortunately, when it comes to landscaping, quite a few homowners don't even want to maintan their own lawn. That even includes mowing.
When I was a lawncare (read: weed killer and pesticide) salesman, I'd run into potential clients that would ask if we also mowed their lawns for them. I had to tell them no, and that's when the possibility of them buying our service would end. I'm glad there are still people who take great pride in their lawn and the overall look of their property. But those who won't even mow their own lawn are the ones who take advantage of the "under the table" mowing, trimming, and even general lawncare services. And yeah, I suspect that those -- at least the vast majority -- are run by illegals. And yes, I agree that it has to stop. (Not because of what my job used to be, but because that takes away from American jobs, as you said.)

Agree with your well formed ideas....
IMO, punishing employers hiring illegal should be a last resort if the steps you outlined fail. Also, many of the illegals these days are from somewhere else besides Mexico and it may be necessary to send them back to their home country and process their application from their home country assuming Mexico is unhappy with their presence.
