RE: UAB Basketball, Rankings, and Scores
Really nice win for UNT.
Just another example of our peers, who also turn over their roster to a large degree every year, coming into the season ready to go and playing well. Something that has eluded us for 4 years.

Their slow tempo is frustrating to defend.

Yes it is. They have a good coaching tree too apparently. The new guy picked up right where McCasland left off.

If we played their style you would be bitching about that too. We are three games into a season where we are replacing arguably the most important position on the court. It’s going to be a long season if you are going to be this upset every time we don’t win a game by 1000.
It’s great for the conference to pick up these wins, let’s hope we can get a few in our limited chances too.

Wichita State improved to 3-0 with a 79-73 victory over Northern Iowa. The Panthers are a top 150 team, while the Shockers remain at 83 on KenPom.
The AAC now has six teams at 3-0; one team at 2-0; four teams at 2-1; one team at 1-1; and one team at 1-2. That’s 30-7 (0.811).

Yep. I remember him beating Memphis once with that style.

How can I enjoy myself if I don't do that though??
I have been honest and said I see a lot of individual pieces that I like, and for short stretches the team has looked really good. I think we will be pretty darn good by the end of the year, and this group still has a high ceiling.
I am disappointed by how they have started out of the gate, though. I expected more. I think most people expected more.
That's water under the bridge though. Just keep getting better and go on a big run now :)

If we hadn't lost the Vermont game, none of the rest would be on anyone's radar. Southern Miss was never close, and the final 28 minutes was just what happens when you have a 30 point lead 12 minutes into the game. We coasted. Shouldn't have, but it's not uncommon. SELA would've been frustrating, but the second half would have mostly made us feel better if we were 3-0 right now. And SELA was only down 3 to Mississippi State at the half the other night. I'm not sure that's a bad team. Vermont was truly one of the weirdest basketball games I've ever seen. Horrific first half coaching decisions combined with incredibly bad luck. Even though I left very frustrated that we lost the first game of the season, I also knew we were significantly more talented than Vermont, pleased with the new talent plus Coleman's improvements, and more than fine if we can coach up this talent. ("If" doing a lot of heavy lifting.) So if pessimism is your thing, that's cool. But my thing is to find the silver lining (until I run out of ideas). I don't think it's been that catastrophic of a start to the season.
Of course, I may feel differently at 8:15 tonight.

Nope. i agree with you. That's how I felt after the first game too. Huge missed opportunity, and one that we should've won, but i agree with what you said.
Just disappointed that we've only played well for 50% of each game, at most - AK has agreed. Disappointed that we continue to take "no name teams" for granted - AK has said so, and Yax said so. That cost us 5+ games last year. Doesn't seem like they've learned the lesson yet. disappointed that YAX in particular doesn't come out fired up for every game, and takes 10-20 minutes (+) to actually start playing hard and impacting the game as he should - he and Ak have also mentioned this too.
It's playing out as a typical AK-lead season so far. Sluggish start, bad losses sprinkled in randomly, miraculous mid-late season turnaround, and playing well in March. i had just hoped and expected, as many others did, that we would be better out of the gate. It's just something we have to accept with AK, I guess. A lot of our peers seem to play better than us to start the year, and have the same roster turnover issues *shrug*.
I'm not pessimistic really, i just expect a lot. And with the groups that AK has assembled the last 4 years in particular, I think expecting a lot is entirely appropriate, especially for a basketball program like UAB.

I skip right past pessimism into denial. For example, it sure has been good for my mental health that we don't have a football team anymore.

RE: UAB Basketball, Rankings, and Scores
It’s year 5 with 3 straight postseason appearances and 2 conference tournament championships. It’s completely fair to demand a decent schedule, talent worthy enough to play it, and contention for an at-large bid and regular season title.
We should not be launching pads for the the Bradley’s, McNeese State’s, San Francisco’s, Arkansas state’s, and Vermont’s. That’s not high major basketball, that many here claim we are.

The decent schedule is completely fair to ask for. I would argue we have the talent to play one. I would also argue that far too many of you thought replacing Gaines was going to be simple from the get go.
The simple fact this year is the AAC appears to be a bit up as a whole, but our OOC schedule is going to hold us back from at large contention without an obscene number of wins.

Speaking of the AAC, KenPom ranks it as the 8th best conference while Barttorvik ranks it 5th. Not too bad.

I never thought replacing Gaines was going to be easy. We miss him.

I wanted Gaines back. I knew we weren’t replacing him defensively.
