Democrat LaKesha Womack, who was charged with a felony mid-campaign for stealing a car, defeated incumbent Republican Tim Moore in North Carolina’s 14th Congressional District on Tuesday, flipping a Republican seat in a race.
Womack, a first-time candidate who raised roughly $56,000, won with 51.1 percent of the vote to Moore’s 48.9 percent, a margin of about 6,415 votes out of more than 288,000 cast, according to unofficial results from the North Carolina State Board of Elections.

Moore, the former longtime speaker of the North Carolina House who first won the seat in 2024, had been widely viewed as a heavy favorite.

Weeks before Election Day, Womack was served with a criminal summons on a pending Class H felony charge stemming from an allegedly unreturned 2019 Toyota Corolla rented from Budget Car Rental.

Court records show the original summons was issued in January 2020 but returned unserved the following month. It was reissued and served on Womack on October 11 at a Polk County campaign rally.

Under North Carolina law, willfully failing to return a hired motor vehicle valued above $4,000 is a felony.

The summons listed the vehicle’s value at $20,000.

Womack’s next court date is November 10.

In a campaign video and subsequent interviews, Womack acknowledged that she did not return the rental car. She said she and her young son were homeless at the time, that she had no stable address to receive notices, and that she believed the matter had been resolved and amounted to money owed to the rental company.

WSOC reports:

Court documents obtained by Channel 9 accuse Womack of failing to return a Toyota Corolla to Budget Rental Car by Oct. 13, 2019. The criminal summons was originally issued three months later. But it wasn’t served until about two weeks ago.

“What happened to the rental car?” Channel 9 Government Reporter Joe Bruno asked.

“I can’t talk about that because it is an ongoing legal case,” Womack said. “But I will say that if it were something much more serious, then I probably would have been served and charged much quicker than a week before early voting started.”

While Womack declined to share specifics on Thursday, prior to being served the warrant, she told supporters on Facebook she had experienced homelessness with her then 10-year-old son.

“At one point, I had a rental car, and I did not return the rental car on time,” she said. “And I did not know that they had filed a case against me for this because, again, I was homeless, so I had nowhere to receive mail.”

The pending felony case will continue after Womack takes office in January.

Hackers Reached France’s Blood-Storage Fridges. Staff Had to Save the Supplies.

Quote:Three French blood-storage sites were hit by a refrigeration attack earlier this week. Hackers had changed temperature settings on equipment holding plasma and other supplies. Staff responded to alarms and moved blood into refrigerators that weren't connected. Nothing was lost, the blood service said.

That's a relief, particularly after the supermarket attacks RedState has been covering. Employees at those stores were left throwing out spoiled food. The French blood service had supplies intended for patients to protect.

Outside providers operated the affected cold-storage units, according to Établissement Français du Sang (EFS), or in English, the French Blood Establishment. Someone had gone in and changed the settings: “Specifically, temperature and defrost thresholds were set to excessively high levels.”

The statement also explained what those units hold:

These cold storage units—located at EFS preparation and distribution sites—are used to store blood products prior to their delivery to healthcare facilities, as well as samples intended for EFS biobanks.

That included frozen plasma for transfusions and manufacturing medicines. EFS said its alarms sounded quickly. Staff got some units back under control and shut others down. Samples were moved to other facilities, while blood collection and distribution continued.

EFS spokesperson Charley Dubois told Reuters:

“We have staff round the clock since blood can be needed at any time. They were warned about the problems by alerts and moved the blood to other refrigerators that were not connected.”

Coolworld maintains the refrigeration controls. Its statement said the company took “appropriate measures,” without identifying them. Customers with the equipment still running could use something more specific.

The vulnerability, Coolworld says, came from another supplier's parts and was beyond its direct control, but it still only affected a limited number of fridges. That's great, fair enough, but which fridges? Which part? Customers need to be able to check the fridges and parts in front of them and find out what needs to be fixed.

For the affected French refrigerators, remote access is now off, according to the health ministry. Investigators are working out how the attackers entered and when the systems can return to service safely.

At home, the Federal Trade Commission recommends turning off remote access on any device you don't need to reach from outside the house, changing the default password it came with, keeping its software updated, and using two-factor authentication where it's offered.

None of these reports identifies the same defect in your kitchen fridge. Still, I'd ask about software support before buying the next one. If the manufacturer expects me to connect it to the internet, it can tell me how long it intends to provide security updates.

Businesses storing medical supplies need more than a promise that someone will fix the software. EFS had staff on duty and other refrigerators available. When the alarms went off, they could move the blood. Anyone buying similar equipment should check whether their own staff would have somewhere to put it.

Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) is set to make two appearances in South Carolina this month as speculation grows surrounding his interest in running for president again in 2028.

Booker’s office announced Thursday he will be making two trips to the Palmetto State in November. His first visit will be to the Sumter County NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet this Friday, during which the senator will deliver remarks. Kansas has not had a Democrat as Senator since 1939. Much like James Talarico in Texas, one of his messages was around the idea of Love Thy Neighbor. In the past I'd say that message is a bit hokey for a political campaign. But, when the government starts murdering your neighbors or hauling them off and putting them in cages, it becomes a pretty effective political message.

The following is my proposal for Division 1 following what I assume will be a defeat for the PCSA.

The big conferences (specifically the Big Ten and SEC) know that they will ultimately have to play players and deal with a CBA so they get in front of it (for once).

They decide to have four separate CBAs for men's basketball, women's basketball, football, and Olympic sports.

The military academies are allowed an exception as their students are already paid.

The following caps (and minimums) are determined (for a five-year period):

Men's basketball: $30 million cap with $3 million floor
Women's basketball: $10 million cap with $1 million floor
Football: $60 million cap with $6 million floor ($30 million cap with $3 million floor for FCS)
Olympic sports: $5 million cap with $500k floor

Conferences that elect to continue in Division 1 must agree to whichever CBAs their athletic department qualifies for.

Ultimately, every conference but the NEC opts in.

The Ivy and Patriot league both buckle.

There are, however, about 15 schools that ultimately decide to opt out.

The big story is on the football side as non-scholarship FCS programs are no longer allowed.

Almost all of those schools drop football.

So, the NCAA's long overdue proposal to move Men's Soccer to a 2 semester Fall/Spring sport to match the international calendar was vetoed today. Over 241 schools at the D1 level voted against the change, largely on financial grounds.

The belief at the moment is the Top 80 Men's Soccer programs will break off and form their own league with support from US Soccer.
