I actually laughed when I read this. I mean, I get it though, why bother with a SoCal school when you can go to New Orleans for a program with very little support and no history of success. And UH is already out of the Pac's reach, they've been trying to get into the big 12 for 25 years and aren't going to fumble that away at the 1 yd line.
Tulane has had far more success than SMU has had over the last 35 years (55 if you exclude cheating years). Neither is well-supported.

Tulane had a great year, but they do not have the football history of SMU. Tulane just did great in the Cotton Bowl, but remember who built the original - "The House That DoaK (Wlaker) built. Obviously Dickerson & James and much more.
Well let's see. We'll start with antiquity (prior to 1980):
SMU SWC Titles: 8
Tulane Southern/SEC Titles: 7
Number of SMU Final AP Rankings: 6 (Highest #3)
Number of Tulane Final AP Rankings: 6 (Highest #5)
Number of SMU NY4 Bowls: 4 (1 W, 1 T)
Number of Tulane NY4 Bowls: 3 (1W)

Then you have the Dickerson/James era, which was absolute SMU dominance, but which comes with a big asterisk.
Since then:
Conference Titles:
SMU: 0
Tulane: 2
Number of Final AP Rankings
SMU: 0
Tulane: 2 (Both top 10)
Number of Bowls
SMU: 9 (3 wins, 4 losses, 2 cancellations)
Tulane: 8 (5 wins (1 NY6), 3 losses) (does not include 1987 Bowl and Bowl L as SMU was on hiatus).

Overall, very similar histories, other than the early 1980s era. Tulane has 2 top 10 finishes distinguishing factor since then.
I am not going to debate the comparison. There is a lot of similarity - Does the PAC want DFW or New Orleans? I am the guy that all along has been saying SDSU, SMU, Tulane and one of - Rice, UTSA or Memphis. I have said every other year in N Orleans would be fun and DFW is projected to be the 3rd largest TV market within 8 to 10 years - currently #5.
