It all depends on what the Big 12 does and what the new "Magic number" is.

The magic number for G5 used to be 12, but now its 14 with the AAC and Sunbelt going to 14, the MAC trying to go to 14 and MWC being open to it if they could have gotten the right Texas schools.

Except the MAC is not "trying to go to 14", they are willing to go to 14 if the right pair of schools wants to join.

It is not automatically the case that there is a "Magic Number" ... there may well be a range of numbers that represents the sweet spot under conditions prevailing at some point in time.

IMO, the MAC is the best-run of the G5 conferences. It seems to have the best sense of itself, isn't always running around like a chicken missing its head trying to do a bunch of things.

It acts prudently, and thus has stability. Some might call it "stagnant stability", but IMO it is realistic stability. Ohio isn't Ohio State and never will be. Miami isn't Miami (FL) and never will be. Eastern and Western and Southern and Northern Michigan aren't Michigan and never will be.

Yes, at the school level, there is dumb decision making, like Akron building that ridonculous football stadium back in 2009. But the conference acts prudently.

Terrific analysis of the MAC. Northern Michigan’s a vital core member providing everyone a roadtrip to the Superior Dome on the shores of Lake Superior. Southern Michigan’s a formidable foe. NMU/SMU is one of the great G5 rivalries.

Analysis of this magnitude is exactly why this board is regarded as an esteemed source in Division I athletic departments all across the country.
