ESPN chairman reaffirms that Oklahoma and Texas will remain in the Big 12 until 2025

In an interview with The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch, however — on Deitsch’s unaffiliated Sports Media Podcast — ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro reaffirmed that Texas and Oklahoma will indeed remain in the Big 12 until 2025.

The biggest thing would be the official ANNOUNCEMENT that Memphis will be joining the B12. That would provide a huge boost to morale, donations, etc.

Maybe things can move forward if indeed the Texas/Oklahoma thing is decided.

If they tell us now, the exit fees would be nothing, we would be participating in collecting the exit fees from the departing members, the incoming members are for sure not going to collect a full share right away.

As soon as Memphis accepts an invite, you remove the university from collecting exit fees from the departing members. But that won't be needed anyway. When comparing how much it cost us to leave ($18m) vs how much more we'll earn the first 2 years even with just getting a half share ($18m or $19m minus the $8m or so from the AAC = $10m more a year at least). So with $10m more a year and $18m exit plus $5m entrance fee, it only takes 3 years to break even. And that's if you had to pay everything upfront, which you wouldn't. Memphis would likely structure something like the 3 of us did.
