90 percent of CUSA's mistakes can be traced back to actions by their own schools. If you chase markets in realignment, and spend considerable amount of time targeting high level TV deals without considering who you are inviting, these things happen.
Marshall and Southern Miss are a prime example. At one point AState fans actually wanted our school to be more like Marshall and Southern Miss, None of us ever considered we'd get a chance to be league mates. And then slowly, every advantage you guys had vanished because CUSA kept pairing you with schools you had no relationship with and tried to force a rivalry out of you, all for the sake of a few TV dollars.
Money starts to dry up, teams start to struggle, and suddenly you guys were faced with a choice of playing with Liberty, rejoining the MAC, or joining the Sun Belt. A decision few would have ever considered 10 years ago.
How did we pick exactly the worst schools from the Sunbelt? It's like you guys held them up a little higher so we'd pick them. Jedi mind trick or some ****. But we literally ended up with the worst, self-serving garbage teams in CUSA.
Not many remember this, but each of the schools added to CUSA had measures of success early in the Sun Belt. Its just that recent results showed a downhill trend, that everyone but the schools themselves saw coming.
North Texas won 4 straight Sun Belt Titles from 2001 to 2004, and then didn't sniff a bowl the next 7 years.
FAU had won the league in 09 and had finished 2nd to Troy multiple times but had begun to struggle by 2011.
FIU was being driven to some success right before they moved thanks to some dude named TY Hilton, who was a year away from the NFL Draft at that point.
MTSU had zero league titles but numerous top 4 finishes when they left, but results were becoming less consistent.
The best add Ironically was WKU, who got passed over at first primarily because they struggled to win a dang game for two years before beginning to climb. Making a Bowl in 2012 and making a title run in 2013.
