IMO, Winthrop now makes a lot of sense as a non football school near Charlotte. Then add a school with football and the CAA is done.

High Point U?

The CAA seems to be targeting schools near big markets. NC A&T and Elon take care of the Piedmont area which includes High Point. What we don't have is a school near the largest city in North Carolina which is Charlotte. Probably the reason a school like Queens College was interviewed by the CAA. The addition of Campbell tightens the geography of a southern division making it more likely Winthrop would come on board and Winthrop is near Charlotte. They would also help College of Charleston with their location.
