A&T official

One more basketball school need to complete the new travel friendly Southern divison

As usual, CAA football is the main highlight of the news brief there. No surprise.

Additionally, that puts CAA football at 14 members in 2023. Does that mean if we add another school, it's more likely they would NOT be a football member as to not offset that even number? With A&T, CAA basketball now stands at 13 members, and CAA football will be at 14.

Likely means there will be at least one more non football school. Likely for the Southern division. If the CAA adds a non football school to the north, that pushes Towson to the South and that ain't happening.

South - CofC, UNCW, Elon, A&T, W&M, Hampton, ?(non football)
North - Towson, Delaware, Drexel, Hofstra, Stony Brook, Monmouth, NU

If we stop at 14 for football and full membership, the number of non football schools in the South would be pretty limited. It then becomes a question of 14 vs. 16 for football and full membership. The CAA could leave football at 14 and go for THREE non football schools for full membership. Or add two more football schools and one non football school to bring both to 16.

The next addition(and there will be at least one more), will signal where we're going in the end.

I'm of the opinion we would only go to 16 if Howard wanted to join. Everything I have read Howard has been very clear they are not interested. So I think we stop at 14 and wait to see if anything changes with Howard.

Who the 14th member will be is going to be very interesting. Are the southern schools going to demand a 7th team to even the balance? Or could they be convinced to go ahead and add a northern member now and wait for Howard and one other school southern school (like Central or Norfolk State) to be 7 and 8 in the southern division and 15 and 16 overall for both basketball and football. The more HBCU schools the easier it will be to get Howard

Fairfield's name has been tossed around a lot and they are already a CAA lacrosse member. Adding Fairfield would allow the CAA to maintain travel partner's
Northeastern-Fairfield
Hofstra-Stony Brook
Towson-Monmouth
Drexel-Delaware
W&M-Hampton
Elon-A&T
UNCW-Charleston

I personally would rather go ahead and get the southern division established now with a High Point, but I wouldn't be surprised if there is a push for Fairfield and a promise for #15 and #16 to be Howard and another southern HBCU

I don't see another HBCU joining the CAA, only A&T and Hampton have chancellors/presidents strong enough to place university priorities first.

HP and Winthrop are my top choices for southern additions...

Winthrop is a great add for basketball but HP is much stronger in the Olympic sports ,especially on the women's side.

With implementation of divisions do you guys believe the CAA will go away from the travel partner format? With the teams being so close I don't see a reason to continue the format. It will reduce student athletes time away from campus and the classroom.

There is no reason why UNCW cant shoot up to Hampton for a Thursday game then drive back to Wilmington for a home game on Saturday...

You make a really good point about the necessity for travel partners if we have divisions. There’s really no point to have them if that’s the case.
