Ouch. It was still time to move on from Bailiff, but Bloomgren obviously was not the correct answer to the question.

For those who have interacted with Bloomgren … is he particularly intelligent? I don’t think that is a requirement to be a successful football coach, but I think Rice’s next football coach should be someone who is intelligent and intellectually curious. Someone who hears criticism and gives it an honest evaluation to see if maybe they can make some improvements.

I do think he is really intelligent football guy, maybe the most intelligent Rice coach since Jerry Berndt. But plenty of examples of smart people not being able to be effective people and lead. Sometimes those are different things. I think this is one of those cases.

Given his broad experience, Stanford success, and NFL exposure...probably unlikely to put much credence in anyone from Rice to talk to him about football. He views himself as the expert. Probably much easier to blame Rice and things around Rice (vs. himself/staff) for this situation given his high confidence in his knowledge about the game (i.e., my stuff worked at other places, doesn't work here..must be the place, not the person/system).

As has been discussed on other threads, he fits in the NFL or OC at a P5 school that wants a hard-nosed offensive scheme. Rice has different leadership needs given this unique situation. Square peg in round hole at Rice. This situation right now is a lose/lose for both Rice and Bloom. But I think it will end better for Bloom than it does for Rice.

I watched the first few minutes of his post game presser, and to his credit for improving in some aspect of his professionalism, the first thing out of his mouth in his preamble was essentially "I had no idea we were this unprepared to play Houston. That's not acceptable, and it's my fault it happened." He did say that assistants and players needed improvements, too, but the overall tone was that it's his responsibility to make sure that happens. Much improved messaging over past years where he tended to blame his roster exclusively.

It's not enough to ameliorate the overall failure of his tenure for me. I'd say this is one of the few positive things I could say about the team yesterday.
