I think they're getting better. A couple of their losses were to very good teams, and they were close games. At least they're competitive now. It can't be easy to recruit to Nebraska.

Nebraska used a quirk in state law to build its dynasty. There was a law that provided that one student from every county in the state got a free ride to the University of Nebraska. An inordinate number of those turned out to be "walk-on" football players, mostly big farm boys who were o-linemen or d-linemen. They had several guys who won major awards who had been "walk-ons." Because they were technically "academic" scholarships, they didn't count against scholarship limits. Finally, the NCAA ruled that any of those who played football had to count against their athletic scholarship limits. They haven't been as good since.
