With Ohio’s Preston having departed, and now with Wright out till January, Ohio will not likely be one of the two top teams when MAC conference play starts.

Some MAC teams were defeated in scrimmages as Northern Kentucky beat Bowling Green, Robert Morris beat Kent State, and Milwaukee beat Northern Illinois.

Miami of Ohio managed to beat Detroit Mercy, and Toledo beat a Div. 2 school. Rollins scored 30-points.

Hi Miggy, I wouldn’t invest in taking stock from a team’s scrimmage performance since coaches are experimenting and tinkering with personnel and schemes.

Agree Lucky! That said I think we got a whole lot better shot from Kampe than normal. He not only played a limited roster but he was Tom Izzo Jr., getting in the refs ears constantly. It was an exhibition but then again Stan was not playing at home in front of critical a--holes like us as Kampe was. LOL!

If we knew the score, one would have some insight into each team’s ability to score and limit the opponent’s scoring. Unfortunately, we are not provided with the score. Who wins the scrimmage tells us little.

But so much more is learned as we got to view EMU’s win over Oakland.

Those who watched the Oakland exhibition game came away with the belief that the EMU is a very good team. As Farrakhan and Scott tore apart Oakland’s zone defense by both penetrating the paint and ether scoring or dishing it off for a score. EMU also executed it’s man to to man defense very well. We also got to see a plethora of good new players.

EMU caused Oakland’s two best players to shoot poorly.

We now need to see how EMU’s pro offensive plays work against Indiana’s man to man defense, and how Indiana’s pro offense works against EMU’s man to man defense.

The scrimmage also showed areas that EMU has to improve on to do better. EMU has to reduce it’s fouling, especially committing far less shooting fouls. Don’t want opponents shooting 70 percent plus at the foul line by taking many free throws. Also need to force more opponent turnovers, and reducing opponent made three’s by better defending the three-point line,

Looking forward to also seeing EMU’s starting line-up in it’s opening game at Indiana.

Hi Miggy, from my observation, this is some additional areas where improvement is needed: 1) Oakland had too many offensive rebounds. 2) Too many times our man to man defense didn’t fight thru screens or lack of communication had two players guarding one player (during a ball screen) where a player was left open for a pass and uncontested shot. 3) EMU was not ready to break Oakland’s full court zone press when they jumped to it and caught us off guard.

Oakland really played hard and will prepare us to be very competitive during the early part of the season. IU has some big time athletes so it will be interesting to see if we can keep the score within 15 - 18 points.
