Unless the ACC can somehow pull full membership for ND and/or Texas out of the hat, this move by the SEC just further relegates the ACC to third-tier status along with the PAC.

I don't realistically see what the ACC can really do here, but things get a lot uglier than they already are if Texas and OU go SEC and the ensuing TV contract therein. Even if that doesn't happen, the ACC is about to be doubled in revenue. What now, tripled with this development?

This is huge. ND joining in football is a must for the ACC to remain viable. Otherwise, the rest of their sports may have to go elsewhere, possibly the Big East.

I'm certainly not going to imply that the ACC can force Notre Dame to do anything they don't want to do.

But for 40 years, ND has had the choice to either call their shot about a conference and and build their conference and future schedule on their own terms. And they've kicked that can down the road in favor of independence today at the risk of what arrangement they get forced into tomorrow.

Do you think ND 20 years ago envisioned a day when they'd HAVE to play five games against a "substandard" conference? But they do, because independence above everything.

They keep grasping whatever toe hold they can get to remain independent with whatever the landscape allows them.

At some point, I don't think it's crazy (although maybe not likely) that they decide it's more important to proactively lock down what their future looks like rather than "stay independent and we'll see what happens."
