As to Notre Dame, I'd be amazed if they gave up their independence. They're the one exception to the rule. They have a big following nationwide. They draw good crowds anywhere they go. They are a blue-chip traditional power with all the trimmings. ND likes and values the ability to play games all over the nation for TV match-ups, recruiting presence, and the big dollar deals they make to schedule them. They can play in California, Texas, Florida, New York, wherever they can make a high value contract. Having the Notre Dame contract puts a network in the college football picture even if they have no one else.
