What does it mean to you?

To most southerners, the Confederate flag is a symbol of southern identity or heritage (not a symbol of hate). We are Southern culturally first and foremost.

I can respect that but the flag is the official flag of the Confederate States of America which fought against the United States in order to preserve the institution of slavery.

You understand that right?

I understand the motivations of the war. The South fought for independence (with a strong motivating factor being the preservation of slavery) and the North fought to force the South to remain in the Union (not primarily to end slavery as evidenced by Lincoln's writings at the time). Many Southerners would prefer self-governence with a confederation of southern states over the status quo. Basically a southern Confederacy without the racism or slavery. Nothing wrong with wanting self-governance. I think we'd all be better off voluntarily splitting the country up into like minded regions based upon culture.

As liberal of progressive, would you prefer to live in a nation made up of pacific states, e.g. a union of California, Oregon, and Washington? Just curious.
