I'm starting to think that he is a worse recruiter than coach. Or maybe just that he does not understand how to organize a coaching staff to recruit Texas (which may be the same thing). I think Jerry Berndt was the last Rice coach to have a staff with so little Texas connection. And we all know how that ended.

By the way, do you remember Don Dobes, Berndt's offensive coordinator? He's back in the Ivies, for several years now at Dartmouth as a coordinator--defensive coordinator.

Good post. Completely true. Bloomgren is the first coach since Bernt to have no Texas recruiting connections. It's one of the several variables that got us to this point.

I don't remember Dobes. I was barely a teenager when Bernt scurried back to the northeast after the 0-11 season in '88. I'm glad he was able to rise from the ashes and do something meaningful.

We need Ivan Jasper and a coaching staff of Texans. That's the recipe for sustainable success at Rice. Jasper ran RU's offense at Hawaii. He knows how to do it.
