Brand New Playoff Expansion News
Not just speculation, or rumors from unnamed sources...
Quote:CFB executive director Bill Hancock, who never rocked the boat as the face of the BCS and now the CFP, revealed the CFP's working group had reviewed 63 (!) possibilities of expanding the playoff. The options included six-, eight, 10-, 12- and 16-team fields. No further information was provided, but those few lines might have well said expansion of the four-team field is not only coming, but it could be coming soon.
It's possible -- not likely -- the working group that includes SEC commissioner Greg Sankey and Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby could whittle the 63 possibilities and make a recommendation to the CFP's management committee as early as June 22. Word is a vote on such a change would need to come this year to better prepare for an expanded field beginning with the 2023 season.
It looks like there is a good chance that it is going to happen, and I'm guessing that they will start with 8 teams, with a spot going to the highest ranked G5, and one home game for the top 4. This would make a lot more sense than a 16 team playoff or any other format some were peddling here.
Playoff Expansion Talk
To put things into perspective, Cincinnati would have been in this year, and we would have been in last year. Another thing that I think will happen, is that it will lead to non P5 teams being ranked more fairly. Last year Florida was at #7 and Cincinnati was at #8. It is one thing to screw Cincinnati when there are no real repercussions, but with an 8 team playoff, you for sure would rather play a 3 loss Florida team than an undefeated Cincinnati team. I guarantee that in 2017, every single team would have preferred to play a 2 loss USC team instead of undefeated UCF.
