Essentially, yes. I’m not making a judgment that this was better competitively for particular Big Ten hockey programs. However, the amount of money that the Minnesota athletic department is making by being in the same conference as Penn State football completely dwarfs anything regarding hockey.

I mean, even men’s basketball (a legit moneymaker) has turned into an afterthought for conference realignment compared to football. Everything else (including hockey) doesn’t even stand a chance when basketball can barely even get into the conversation for all of the football-related decisions.

Will Leitch's newsletter this weekend pointed out that of the top 50 college sports teams that bring in the most revenue only one isn't a football team- Duke basketball sits 49th. Illinois football is 40th.

If you are a B1G member and you aren't Michigan and Ohio State (and to a lesser extent Penn State and a possible future extent USC), the most valuable thing you do is hang on to the coattails of Michigan and Ohio State's football team. If you are Indiana or Illinois or Minnesota or Wisconsin, you need to spend on football to make sure that you aren't so abject that Michigan and Ohio State don't kick you to the curb. Or decide that you only get a lesser share of B1G TV revenue.
