1. The G5 champion would, at least perception-wise, have the easiest path to the playoff. You will hear this argument in public when this gets considered "why is it fair that App State can play ULL and FAU on the way to a playoff berth when Tennessee has to face Florida and LSU?". Or stated in an AAC sort of way "why is it fair that USF gets to play Tulane and SMU when Florida has to play LSU and Texas A&M?"

I think this is very perceptive, partially because I've said something similar before: Just look at the seven years of the current CFP. Had a 5-1-2 model been in effect, and using CFP rankings as a guide, we'd have results like:

UCF would have more playoff trips than Florida, FSU and Miami. Combined!

Memphis would have more playoff trips than Tennessee, Arkansas, and Ole Miss.

Western Michigan would have more playoff trips than Michigan.

Houston would have more playoff trips than Texas.

Boise would have more playoff trips than USC or UCLA.

Cincy would have more playoff trips than Louisville or Kentucky.

If history is any guide, a G5 auto-spot would give a tremendous boost - in terms of stature and recruiting - to G5 schools that have long been "little brothers" in the shadows of more established nearby P5. Little brothers who will be able to crow about making the playoffs while the big brothers have not.

I am not sure the P5 is eager to endorse that kind of situation. And that's what will happen with a "dedicated lane" for the G5.

That’s ALREADY the case with respect to CFP bowl games. If those schools want an “easier” path, they can always switch conferences. I doubt any of them would. The reality is the P5 will not be deciding in a vacuum. There will be substantial public pressure to provide real access for ALL FBS leagues. My guess is the smart thing would be to frame it as a players rights issue. ALL players should have a legit path to the playoff if they win all their games. I don’t see how you win a public battle against that kind of players argument.

Excellent point!

Current and former G5 and independent players should set up an organization and contact a good law firm that would be able to litigate that type of case on their behalf. The quickest way to make that happen would be for the G5 conferences to provide the financial and logistical backing and the necessary guidance with which to pursue such a strategy.
