My preference was for head coaching experience too but it's just a preference. There is no magic formula. There are no "steps" that mean you'll be successful or the lack of mean you'll fail.

Roy Williams, Tom izzo, Mark few, all did fine going from assistant to head coach.

Martin seems like a good fit but is a huge mystery. Can he be a head coach? I rather have a good fit that can grow into a great coach than an awful fit the wrecks the program.
