But at the federal level, the interstate system was designed to bypass major metro areas. It was cities and states that wanted them redirected through downtown, a design change that was paid for with local dollars.
You could not be more wrong. The entire plan was to connect major metro areas. Thus the most urban areas got a haircut relative to a highway coming in. You must be confused with the 2 digit (major highways) and the 3 digit (the loop beltways).
The system was designed to connect the nation better than the US Highway System did. But moving military personnel and equipment more easily through the nation did not require direct connection with major metros; just close approach. The redirects, spur and loops around came about in later iterations.
Ike admired the autobahn and how easily he could move across great expanses in relatively short order.
Hence, our interstate system. Built for speeds of 70+ where possible.
Montana was “safe and reasonable” (or something to that effect) just 25?years ago or so, a violation was a 5 buck fine paid on the spot to the cop.
Late for a flight after a ski trip we covered about 130 miles in about 85 minutes in this newish rig called a Maxima. Got there with time to spare.
Times were better even then. What happened?
