The host casino subsidizes the tournaments in Las Vegas. If a conference is going to burn a stack of cash to play a conference tournament, might as well get sponsorship money plus free or deeply-discounted hotel rooms for each team's entourage, instead of playing in some town where you don't get that deal.

Not only that, but if you move it to Texas, you’re counting on all the Texas schools to do the heavy lifting. How well does the SLC tournament do in Katy?

Looks like they had 1751 in attendance for the last SLC championship game (More than the 1200 or something listed for the 2017 SBC championship game that TXST played in. I was there, and I doubt that 1200 is accurate).

Not sure how that relates to other conferences though. I know tournament attendance can be very fickle depending on the right teams and expectations.

Realistically Vegas isn't a bad place for the tournament. It's a destination people can look forward to if they want to attend.

It is an easy flight to book and generally pretty inexpensive from major hubs.

Even though it was close, Katy was not of interest when I followed the SLC.
