How is Billy Napier not Auburn's coach? Is Auburn too cheap to not offer enough money to get him away from Louisiana or too stupid to not know he can coach? No normal coach would turn down Auburn to stay in the Sun Belt.

Napier was smart enough to not take a job where he wouldn't have the ability to replace the DC who worked with the high dollar boosters to get the previous coach fired.

Remember that Napier worked with the fainting goat when both were at Clemson.

Total BS from the message board crowd! Gus averaged 4 losses a year and while he managed to beat Alabama 3 times he didn't beat Georgia but once. Those are Auburn's 2 biggest rivals. He might have been fired sooner but with Dye passing away and Tuberville getting elected a U.S. Senator we had two old coaches off of the payroll and Chizik had just been paid off for 3. That's all that kept Gus around. Auburn didn't want 4 getting bought out at the same time. Dye's job was built in for him. Malzahn's youngest graduated Auburn in the Fall. At that point everyone was in agreement it was time for a change. He not only lost 4 games a year, but never developed a QB, and always had one inexplicable loss per year. His fate was sealed this year with the loss at South Carolina.

Just repeating what I was told by one of Napier's Furman teammates eating Lowcountry Boil & oysters and drinking bourbon after a dog drive last Saturday. I figure if anyone would know the true story it would be one of his closest friends.

And I know for a fact there was friction between Steele and Napier when they were at Clemson. There was friction between pretty much everyone on staff and the fainting goat.

And it first came from an Auburn chat site before Napier gave a reply. Any excuse is a good excuse. The only ones who know the truth were the ones in the interview. Steele is popular, but it's because his defenses have kept Auburn from suffering even more under Gus. The issue is academic anyway. Auburn couldn't fire Gus until they had the buyout covered. Nobody at Auburn hated Gus and he and his wife and kids got along with everyone and that helped throughout his stay. And if he kept a residence here nobody would be surprised, Chizik and Dye both did.

And as far as low country boils go I've been to my share at St. Simons and Jekyll. And after a few beers the recipe isn't the only thing that is embellished. It's not even clear here yet as to who was seriously interviewed and who was just spoken to. We'll see if Steele stays with Harsin or not. But if the story is donors had a hand with Gus's firing because of Steele that story doesn't jibe with those doing the search which was more removed from donor influence than any I've known of in the past.
