If the Playoffs were to expand, with a path for the top G5 program, would you rather be in a P5 conference where you had to face OSU, PSU, Wisconsin, etc... or would you rather be in Cincinnati?
I assume any position you took at a P5 conference would be due to a really poor record and require a rebuild, where as you already have the foundation built here to be the top tier G5 program most years.
P5 every day. The reason being is this is much larger than the team's chances getting into the playoffs. You have to consider the bowl game portfolio of the conference, the money, and most importantly how it affects the entire athletic department. When we first got relegated to the AAC I thought it would affect football more than hoops. Truth be told, being in the AAC is putting a glass ceiling on the program. We are in a 2-3 bid league, which also hit the bottom line when you consider money distributed from NCAA tournament appearances.
As an Athletic Department, it’s a no brainer obviously. I’m looking at this solely in terms of Fick and potentially future coaches. As a football coach, those aren’t really your concerns though.
The bowl tie-ins are definitely something to consider, though ultimately I think you have to like your chances to compete for the NY6 bowl, or Playoff birth, most years considering what we have built (assuming CFP expansion).
It would definitely be one less reason Fick would want to leave for mid tier B10 jobs.
Maybe another way to get at what you are asking is given the current landscape would you prefer to be a fan of UC or a fan of a team in a situation like Pittsburgh (or Purdue, Indiana, Ill, UK, WVU, UL etc.). My take is that we are all going to have our ups and downs largely tied to the coaching status. You could look at it both ways (over the past decade and at the next decade) and I think I'd rather be a UC fan - even generically speaking. Of course, it's hard to say how much of that is due to us catching lightning in a bottle in Coach Fickell.
So obviously you have to go with the P5 money, but as a fan this isn't a bad fit in a lot of ways.
As a fan and also as a coach. People mention Michigan and Penn State. If the CFP expanded, I think it’s just one less reason for Fick to move if there was a clearer pathway to the Playoff.
As a fan it’s also similar because once again we have a clear path to the playoff. While it would likely take a special season still, it would be a lot easier than the current (non)pathway.
