For the most part, these governors and mayors are implementing these orders based on authority that is granted to them by statute. These laws have provisions that make it a crime to violate the orders. So when the governor issues an order that you can't have a gathering of people in your house, violating that order is a criminal offense.

That's because if you don't put some form of enforcement behind the order, people feel free to ignore it. If you put in a mask mandate with $100 fine, $500 for second offense, you get more cooperation. Same thing as seat belt laws.

That's kinda my point in all this. We've made constitutionally protected activities- i.e. gathering with people in the privacy of my home- and making it criminal behavior.

How about just telling the truth instead of lying about. How about encouraging people to take sensible precautions instead of saying it’s no big deal and will magically disappear.
