It almost always takes this long, but it's not usually this close. Abnormally high numbers of not-in-person votes increases the time it takes to count those votes. When there's enough in-person votes that the mail-in votes can't change the result, it means they can call the state on election night, even if the numbers aren't final. That wasn't the case this year.

Florida handled it on election night. They actually had the forethought to start counting the mail in ballots when the polls opened and were staffed adequately to handle the task. There is NO reason this election was not over within at least 12 hours after the last poll closed even with the turnout. Its an embarrassment to our process and it has made the system look flawed and appear in some cases to be corrupt..even if it that is unfounded. It has given those that have distrusted our system for decades fuel for further distrust and an easy platform now to spread that distrust via social media. It will take a monumental effort going forward to convince these people that their vote counts.
