Similarly, if one genuinely objects to particular policies, it might make sense to join protests whose timing, manner and content are directed to those policies, rather than one whose trigger, motive, and unifying principle is complaining about a numerical result.

Clearly we're going to have to agree to disagree on this point (again... just speaking for myself here).

That does indeed seem to be he nub of it. :)

I will belabor this once more to point out that you are explaining to me what my motivations were for attending this protest (my own assessment of my personal motivations is incorrect... you suspect that "I am not being honest with myself"). I seriously don't think you have a better ability to assess what motivates me from over the web and having never met me.

Indeed, I was drawing an inference about you from observation of other Rice alumni I know personally who engaged in the same activity, which includes the observation over time that many of them are not honest with themselves. I think I even sort of phrased it that way ("If he is like the others I've seen..."). But admittedly, perhaps inferring too much.

No, based on my observations of other people who took part in the protests.

Yeah... that does sound a little better TBH. Kind of glossed over that part while reading your response. Problem with doing this during work.
