I agree that the numbers (assuming they’re accurate) look odd. But the decision to consolidate the men’s and women’s budget seems to make sense given the overlap - same coaches, same facilities, shared equipment, probably some of the same travel, etc.). Then the consolidated budget would have to be split back up for NCAA reporting purposes - but on what basis? Maybe proportional to the number of M and F athletes? But the same endowment dollars possibly are still being spent on the same things as before- only the accounting has changed.

I don’t have any inside info - just trying to think what an explanation might look like.

It is my understanding that the accounting rules mandated by the NCAA for reporting differ from normal accounting procedures. It is possible that someone mixed apples and oranges and came up with a confusing conclusion.

For instance, I am chairman of the board of a very small bank. The IRS and the FDIC have differing accounting standards. We have approximately $1 million in unrealized profits, upon which we have paid taxes, that the FDIC won't allow us to report as profits on our financials. That approximates 6 months of normalized profits.
