NMSU best....make that ONLY....hope to get into an FBS conference is for the WAC to go FBS.

The SBC/C-USA/AAC are forming an alliance of sorts as we speak. They will probably "trade" some schools and all come out with 10-12 (Football... Most likely 12 so they can host a CCG for some extra $$$$) Schools each all in a tighter geographic footprint. They may even pick off a MAC team or 2 and even possibly 1 or 2 MWC teams.

UConn and UMass are not out of the realm of possibility in the expansion game....but they are pretty low on the list. However, Liberty might very well get into the SBC/C-USA/AAC mix because of money and the geography. That will throw a major wrench in the ASUN's plan to go FBS. If that happens, Central Ark will be begging to join WAC.

UTEP is in a very precarious situation as well. Much like NMSU, no one really wants them. C-USA would be happy to get rid of them and the MWC would only add them as a last resort. In 10 years they might very well end up in the WAC, so they better play nice with NMSU.

Only the P5 conferences are making money off the TV deals. Well, "enough" money to offset travel expenditures and such anyway. Everyone else is looking at ways to cut athletic budgets, not increase them. The best way to do it is being affiliated with a conference in a tight geographic footprint and getting the most bang for the buck. G5 schools that are "outliers" of a conference (especially if their football team is seen as generally lousy) are in danger of being kicked to the curb.

That's a hard saying for NMSU alums to hear. The landscape probably won't change enough for NMSU to garner any attention. From everything I have seen and read NMSU is not in any of the discussions for getting an invite from an FBS conference or leaving the WAC. So, I guess I agree with you NMSU isn't in demand other than the WAC.

Now, other the other hand there is a lot of talk about Cal Baptist being a target of the WCC with the departure of BYU. That actually makes a lot of sense when you look at their current members. I guess transition is the sticking point for now.

If football is the new WAC focus I suspect the non football schools will at some point look for conferences that more align with their athletic departments. In the meantime the WAC still needs to be focused on bringing in more football schools. I have been hearing good news about UTRGV talking football.
