I'm sure there are several different meanings to several different groups of liberals/progressives. The one's I'm familiar with say it to mean anyone with any skin other than black or brown (African-American or Latino) has an unfair advantage in today's society.

I would retort that it is one's behavior and work ethic that determines one's limitations. It has been proven time and time again. Both ways. I know plenty of "white people" who "ain't worth a plug nickel." They had/have no work ethic, and bad behavior.

Life is kinda simple. In a way.

So in your mind prejudices don't exist.

Stereotypes don't exist.

Profiling doesn't exist.

Prejudices DO exist. MUUUUUCH less so than when I was a kid in the 60s and 70s, but yes, they do exist. So what? Are you just going to lay there on the couch and have a pity party? Or are you going to pull yourself up by your own bootstaps and apply yourself, and make something of yourself (not you in particular, but those that feel affected).

Stereotypes DO exist. Usually for a coherent reason, even if you find them distasteful. Take me for an example. I grew up in the south as a white male. The stereotype of me would be "uneducated hick". What did I do about it? I learned not to say "ain't" and "fixinta", and got rid of the twang from my speech. I PAID ATTENTION IN ENGLISH CLASS... Although I did not go to college until my mid-40s, I worked my way, first at a Danvers restaurant as a line cook, got enough experience to put on a job application, and into an office job using the trade I learned in high school (Architecture), paid my bills on time, and if a cop pulled me over, it was "Yes Sir" and "No Sir". No, it wasn't a big Architecture firm, just a local home design company. Interestingly enough, and this was back in 1985-86ish, my boss hired 2 black employees. One was always on time, dressed nicely, and was polite and smiling all the time. The other was a bad attitude case from the moment he was hired, and acted (and sometimes even said) that we "whities" owed him this job. Guess which one had a long career there and which one didn't.

Profiling DOES exist. And thank goodness it does. Granny doesn't need to be fondled by TSA. Trust us.... She doesn't have a bomb in her shoe. Police departments hire profilers for a reason. This is the one area that we are closest on agreeing about harassment. I can empathize. But if a black male is getting pulled over for being black, is it really that? Or is it that he is dressed like a gang member/drug dealer? If you were wearing a nice short-sleeve button-down and had your hair quaffed in a more conservative manor, is it possible you would not have been pulled over? If you will admit that, then you have to admit that, it is not the COLOR of your skin. It is the CULTURE you outwardly present. To me, those are two totally separate things.

I don't like things like "no-knock" warrants, and "driving while black" tickets. But in general, IN GENERAL, life in this country is what you make of it.
