The conference would still have to fight for the G5 at large Access Bowl spot like it does now as neither BYU nor Boise guarantee the at large spot on their own. The bowl situation would still primarily suck as the only net gain in that area would be the Potato Bowl in Boise's Stadium. BYU doesn't bring any major bowl access. 07-coffee3

Your assumption would be that the teams would only bring their current bowl affiliations, and that ESPN (owner of most bowls and both of our TV contracts) wouldn't change things.

Either way, I think it's important to think ahead to the 8-team playoff scenario. Assuming the G5 doesn't have an auto-bid (which I don't think we should get, but that's another conversation), then what course of action puts us in the best spot to qualify for an at-large in the 8?

I personally think BYU, with improved recruiting that they would achieve in the AAC, could help.

BYU and Boise State together would bring the expanded AAC a better bowl than the Idaho Potato Bowl. The Las Vegas Bowl invited BYU or Boise State in 11 of the past 15 years. And, one of the years without either was Houston v. San Diego State.

Average Las Vegas Bowl attendance involving BYU is over 40K.

IMO, the expanded AAC with BYU, Boise State and San Diego State would bring two western bowl games, with one of those either the Holiday Bowl or the Los Angeles Bowl versus the PAC 12.

Boise will never be invited. Nor is the Vegas bowl coming with them and BYU/SDSU. 11 of the last 15 times? How many times has BYU been as an independent? Because you know this bowl was a match up between the MWC boise and BYU were part of and the PAC. We'll just also overlook that it is tied to the SEC/Big10 and the PAC now so they couldn't even keep the bowl they have performed so well in.

BYU has an open invitation. Boise is persona non grata. SDSU is too far. If we add beyond BYU it will almost assuredly be Army and Air Force. No one else is getting more than a formal business reply politely declining.

BYU played in the Las Vegas Bowl as an independent in 2015, despite the MWC's contract with the bowl for the MWC conference champion...

My point is that BYU and Boise State are attractive candidates for the western bowls.

The expanded AAC with BYU, Boise State and San Diego State would bring two western bowl games, with one of those either the Holiday Bowl or the Los Angeles Bowl versus the PAC 12.

BYU got in when Boise the MWC champ went to the access bowl. Otherwise no. The Holiday bowl is in bad shape which is only made worse by the SDSU stadium deal. The LA bowl would likely remain with the MW, because, oh yeah we signed contracts till 2026. There is no advantage there.

Boise has a good program, one that isn't doing that much in a weaker league they win slightly more than Fresno and SDSU with extra money and a supposedly superior program.

BYU is a strong program who has some problems and some advantages in independence.

I like SDSU, but they have had success based on one coach, who is gone now. They have the fundamentals to be a really good program, but they have had those fundamentals their entire history, and have nothing to show for it besides their recent success and Faulk.
