I don’t think anyone is being callous or dismissive. But, I hope ODU leaders didn’t make this decision based on the emotions of a single data point. It sucks that the young man died. But, the reality is young men die every single day. As a society, we can’t use emotion to dictate our decisions. This man’s death has nothing to do with whether or not he was a football player (except, perhaps, that he’s likely been encouraged in his obesity to be more effective). ODU’s decision not to play field hockey, I hope, was not impacted because of a possibility of a single event like this happening.
