Linguistic digression: I think you mean either "tack" (a direction of sailing; figuratively, a way of approaching a problem or argument), or "tactic" (move or sequence of moves to achieve a purpose).

"Tact" (which etymologically means "touch", as in deftness) means sensitivity or politeness -- almost the opposite what you felt that particular approach was.

In a related case of words that sound similar but have opposite implications, being tacky ("in poor taste") is of course the opposite of having tact.

OK, now back to arguing.
