There can't be any split scholarships in FB, MBB, WBB per NCAA rules. So the guess is he's got the 'hometown discount' and probably a Pell Grant to go with it, which in the long run might be better $$$ than a scholarship.

And I've speculated the "hometown (not his hometown, but yougettheidea/daddy works for the team" discount on tuition but some others have thrown water on that idea. I will say this, I've never seen Beane ever listed as a walk-on (other than SIU, of course). So, I'm not 100% sold on this even though it all adds up to be....plausible.
