The reason it's different is because the flu has been around for awhile and we have a relatively good idea of how deadly it is with our current precautions. That said, yes, it probably would be good for society if people wore masks more often during flu season. In many parts of Asia this is the cultural norm.

Covid is new, it's already proven to be wildly contagious, and it's mortality rate is somewhat threatening. Even now, scientists have trouble understanding exactly how virulent it is, how often it may mutate, and so on and so forth. The cold reality of this entire pandemic is that the most concerning issues all stem from how little is known about the virus.
