The flu is actually a decent comparison. We're all familiar with the mutations that occur in the seasonal flu and how flu shots are designed every year to keep up. Likewise, there are many people who don't even get the flu shot, and this can result in flare ups.

But here's the most important thing, we now feel pretty confident that the flu seasons are under control. Not 100%, mind you, there are still people watching it every day. But it's not something we lock down for, obviously, despite those 12k-60k deaths a year.

So, your first goal is to eradicate the disease, right? You can't keep taking on an additional 60K novel deaths from a new disease every decade.

But if that's not possible, you learn to control it and live with it. So if from March to July to December we find that covid is still around but we now have a fraction of the death rates we did at the start, we might be able to finally say "okay, we might take those 20K deaths a year, and that's not ideal, but it's all we have". We can't do that right now because, as I've said, deaths are much, much higher and we could instead be looking at something crazy like 200k a year.

Until then you try to eradicate it and hope for the best.
