...because there's medical treatment/prevention for the flu. You can get a shot or take a pill to treat or prevent symptoms or illness. With the flu, 'Mericans can "fix the glitch" by stopping into a Walgreens once, rather than totally changing their lives by doing crazy things like washing hands more frequently and not licking microphones.

The average deaths from flu each year is 37,000. The flu season is 28 weeks (per the CDC). That's an average of 1321 a week. The worst flu season ever was 70,000 or an average of 2500 a week. Our first death from COVID was February 28th. Today (as of 2:20 PM CT) we have 41,575 deaths. That's 7 weeks (52 days from 1st death) or an average 5596 people a week.
If you want a better breakdown
March 20 – 230 deaths
April 20 – 41,575
41,345 deaths in 4 weeks = 10,336/week

By comparison, H1N1 was 470 days*, or 67 weeks. We lost 12,469 fellow citizens for an average of 186 deaths a week.
