RE: 2020 Mid - American Conference Tournament
I wanted to mention something about the game last night quickly. I thought it looked like we had a very strong game plan to handle the zone. A couple things I noticed us doing a lot of were 1) trying to get the ball to the elbow then hit someone cutting from the corner to the basket. Seemed like Beck was particularly effective in this role. There were several times where we didn't execute it perfectly and didn't end up getting the shot. But the fact that the ball had already passed through the paint started the zone getting behind and scrambling to catch up. The other thing 2) was making passes to the man in the corner while a wing man was between the man and the guy in the corner. So instead of swinging it around the perimeter they basically skipped a guy on the arc and went straight to the corner. Again this wasn't always successful. A couple times EMU picked off the pass. But what this did was make the EMU guy in that area unsure what passing lane to protect. So it was creating more space for the the man outside the arc. Also when the pass was successful it meant the whole zone had to make a large shift which again helped to get them behind in rotation. The way you beat a zone is by getting ahead of their rotation.
Morale of the story, I thought that was a well planned and well executed attack. I was very worried that not having our longest perimeter player would be a real problem against the zone but it was definitely not.
