Beamont cuts

I did not know that Beaumont is the biggest health system in MI. My how it has grown. It sits right across from the high school I attended, of course that was fifty
plus years ago.

This is a situation happening at many hospitals. Hospitals wanted to leave as many open beds as possible by halting elective surgeries.
Shrine has probably changed a bit since the ‘70s too. My cousin went to school with Kristen Bell. Keegan Michael Key went there as well. Probably a lot of other distinguished alums as well.

WBH acquired Oakwood and its hospitals in Dearborn, south shore, Taylor and Wayne. They also acquired Bons Secours (WBH Grosse Pointe) years ago and they picked up Botsford Farmington Hills in the same time as Oakwood’s. They have affiliations with OU medical school and the Oakwood deal gave them connections to Wayne St.

I’m seeing imbeciles citing the recent layoffs as a sign that the Coronavirus is not that bad. On the contrary, layoffs are due to the economic hit that these systems are incurring for cancelling elective procedures and administrative jobs are being cut as well. Treating COVID patients requires a lot of $$$. It costs over $10K a day for a vented ICU pt and some are staying on vents for weeks not just days. CTs are the diagnostic standard, they are not cheap. Meds, labs and Xrays as well as other diagnostic testing. There are countless jobs within a hospital system aside from bedside nursing and physicians.

Patients are also very leery about coming in for treatments and getting exposed. My sister works in Oncology and the head of the dept. was combing through charts of candidates for cancer procedures, this after a pt came in to pre-op then divulged that her GP had tested her for Covid. They checked the chart and labs came back Covid +, she potentially exposed the reception staff, public and preop staff and patients. a few weeks ago they were scheduled out thru May. The back logs are getting longer by the day.

DMC and McLaren have also recently had to furlough or lay off employees.

When I attended Shrine from 66-70 the enrollment was 800 plus. Now, only about 300 attend. They also have 7th and 8th grades on the top floor. So the high school is on the remaining two floors. I really enjoyed my time there. I received a good education and had a lot of fun. Great music and WABX just added to the whole experience.

In response to patients leery not coming in, I read that deaths due to strokes and heart attacks are going up because people are afraid to go the ER. Some of the hospitals here have set up COVID triage tents. If you think you have COVID they send you there. Also only the person being treated can go into the ER.
