Sure other conferences added some anchors but they have traditionally good programs that can get big non-conference wins and boost the conference. C-USA added three schools that were FCS within the past five years and a perennial doormat New Mexico State.

Haters like to write off 1984 as some crazy fluke where BYU won by default. But Lavell's early 80s teams were consistently playing at a high level & producing NFL talent. He was able to sustain that until, yeah, we admittedly got a few breaks.

But that's how it works for anyone not already perceived as a blueblood. You have to log in a couple strong seasons & then run the table. Cinci would not be in the current playoff discussion if they weren't fresh off multiple double digit win seasons. Even Dabo had to rebuild Clemson's brand before they became a regular playoff challenger.
