Two things mitigate against Memphis ever consistently having 60K at a college football game:
  • Memphis is metropolitan city, not a college town. Those schools that consistently have 80-110K at their football games are in college towns, and the college team is the only thing happening for miles around. Memphis will never be that. Plenty of entertainment options for the diverse population in the city on any given weekend.
  • Memphis is a basketball city sports wise. Basketball is less expensive to run and have success. More kids can play (much better high school B-ball than football in Memphis), and the game is easier to market player wise. One or two great players can turn the fortunes of team around for years. In football, it is much harder and more expensive to field a good team. Memphis, because of social-economics, will never support a perennially losing team, no matter the sport. Basketball has been better competitively than football over the years at U of M, therefore, the city will support basketball better.

As much as I love football, (pro-football is my favorite sport), I, as a native Memphian and Alum, have always believed that U of M football had a lower ceiling than basketball. Norvell may leave, just like Fuente, because there are better football jobs in the country. Penny recognized something that even Cal never did, that Memphis has unlimited potential in Basketball, can compete and win national titles, with the right leadership and coaching. Memphis is really a top 10-15 basketball job in the country. You really can't say that for Memphis football.

Look at it this way, if Memphis loses Saturday, and they shouldn't, they are looking at another Birmingham Bowl. And honestly, that maybe the ceiling for Memphis Football, and that is why the last 2 good coaches have left.
