I dislike the NCAA as much as anyone else here, but they're not the origin of this issue. The SEC is, and the other conferences followed their lead.

The SEC started this by finding a loophole that allowed a CCG that is in excess of the maximum number of regular season games. Eventually everyone else played monkey-see-monkey-do and added their own CCG... which, again, is a game in excess of the maximum number of regular season games.

Anyone is free to organize their own conference anyway they want if they stay within the maximum number of regular season games. Have four divisions, have conference semifinals in football, have an 8-team playoff for the conference title, have everyone in the conference play off in a tournament as in basketball, any of that is already allowed under the rules -- but every one of those games will count toward a team's maximum allowed regular season games.

Now, if what you really want are new rules, ok, but that's a lot different from having no rules at all.

Yeah, rules! Rules like your school can't appear on television more than 3 times in a season? Rules like we can take up to 6 years to pay you your basketball tournament shares, and oh by the way we'll make interest on that money in the interim? And how about rules enforcement? Yep, they are stellar as hell in that regard and oh so fair!

I agree that the conferences need to come to an agreement on the number of games played but you are way the hell off base in singling out the SEC and Roy Kramer for coming up with an actually meaningful game when Bowls (I know not part of the regular season, but the CCG isn't really either) were the first to expand the season for the sake of the chambers of commerce of the host cities. So since the inception of the Rose Bowl the precedent was there for extra games outside of the regular season. Just saying!

The bolded part is the whole point.

Practically, whether or not there is an NCAA, there has to be an agreed upon limit on the number of games played.

Also practically, administrators are not going to take the public-relations whacking that they would get by increasing the number of FBS games beyond the total of 14 or 15 (including CCG and playoffs) that the top teams already play. Especially while they continue to insist on administrators and coaches reaping countless millions from the sport while the athletes get nothing.

The current max of 12-plus-one-CCG before bowl games is not going to be increased.

In the NCAA we may get a pre season game in exchange for the Spring Games.

Other than that it just requires getting rid of the NCAA or leaving it and setting up the rules most conducive to whatever the coming business model will be.
