I think this is likely after giving it some thought.

According to rumors...

XII + Boise St, Memphis
AAC + Air Force, Colorado St

AAC (9) also adds Charlotte, Rice, and UAB to reach 12.
MWC (9) adds North Texas, UTEP, and UTSA to reach 12.
Sun Belt (10) adds Marshall and Southern Miss to reach 12.

XIV
East: Central Florida, Cincinnati, Iowa St, Kansas, Kansas St, Memphis, West Virginia
West: Baylor, Boise St, BYU, Houston, Oklahoma St, TCU, Texas Tech

AAC
East: Charlotte, East Carolina, South Florida, Temple, Tulane, UAB
West: Air Force, Colorado St, Navy*, Rice, SMU, Tulsa
* Football-only
^ Non-football: Wichita St

MWC
Mountain: New Mexico, North Texas, Utah St, UTEP, UTSA, Wyoming
West: Fresno St, Hawaii, Nevada, San Diego St, San Jose St, UNLV

SBC
East: Appalachian St, Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern, Georgia St, Marshall, Troy
West: Arkansas St, Texas St, South Alabama, Southern Miss, UL Lafayette, UL Monroe

CUSA: Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee St, Old Dominion, Western Kentucky

What does CUSA do here? It's not a bad base of schools to have!

If your scenario plays out, why would Marshall leave CUSA? The primary reason Marshall wants out of CUSA is the Texas schools. Take those six, plus add JMU and then go after Appy, Coastal, and Georgia Southern. Or go after Appy, Coastal, both Georgia State and Southern.

Why would Marshall leave ODU, UNCC, WKU and MTSU and two Florida schools for the Sun Belt and weekday games? It makes no sense whatsoever.

For better conference leadership. For reuniting with App State. For staying with its rival Southern Miss. For appearances at Coastal Carolina, which is right near a large alumni base is located (Myrtle Beach area). For being in a conference where schools are passionate about football, as was on display on ESPN last Thursday.

It's not a slam dunk, but it's reasonable for Marshall to explore its options.
