There are additional criteria I use to rate a coach. Has he generated additional interest in the program (record crowd at Quick Lane Bowl)? Is he involved in the community and campus? Does he run a clean program or are his players making news at the police department? How do his players regard him? Is he compliant, with respect to the University concerns, for schedule changes like selling the KY home game? I would say in those in those tertiary concerns he rates a "exceeds" rating.

As for the primary concern, W-L record, I would look at two things. First, how does his record compare with the past, thus the potential of the program? EMU last won the MAC football championship 33 years ago under Jim Harkema. Harkema's last three years were a disaster and the FIVE coaches since probably would look at a 4-8 record considering this year's schedule as a mild success. I will as well. Second, who are we going to hire to improve the program and replace Creighton at his current price? CMU was fortunate to get McElwain at a discount due to Florida supplementing his salary, Lester at WMU and Candle at Toledo are making a whole lot more dollars than CC.

Frankly I think we are starting out this year 0-3 as the payday games at Kentucky and Missouri are unwinnable and the bad contract game with Army is as well. MAC schools, due to financials are simply going to schedule at least three revenue away games to keep their athletic department financially above water. Unless you can devise a plan to play and get handsomely paid by lousy P5 cellar dwellers, the MAC champion will never have a record like WMU did in 2016. 4-8 suddenly translates to a near .500 record, a point of pride to Ron English.

Oh and bye the way I have been a strong critic of Murphy. That said, I am so glad he is back this season. The WMU basketball dumpster fire convinced me of that. Let's let the dust settle after this year's seasons and figure where we go from here.
