I'm always amused when I see the P5 conferences referred to as a "cartel". Not only it is painfully childish, but it reveals just how desperately the writer desires their school to be part of the group. And if that were to ever happen for their school, how quickly the "cartel" references would disappear and the lording of their status over former peer schools and conferences would begin.

I am guessing this was started by an AAC fan, as they meet what you mentioned, they are so jealous they make up P6 and a fake National title.

J52, a few things to consider:

1. some UCF fans “get it.” They understand, and fully, that UCF was not the national champ in 2017. And many American fans understand this and find any UCF or AAC supporter who honestly believes this as … well, simply head-scratching.

2. I respect the fact that you have given the American (in broad terms) props in various posts.

3. I strongly follow two AAC universities/athletic programs (Cincinnati and Memphis, and want them both — and, in broad terms, the league — to do well). But I agree with you that the American is not a “power football conference.” I do not embrace the Power 6 narrative that some AAC fans do, though I do understand, to a degree, the mindset behind hit. Having said that, your (seemingly) frequent need to chastise American homers (even, on occasion, when not provoked) … is puzzling. I probably dislike American Athletic Conference apologists more than you (they are “hurting the team,” so to speak, and I am on the team and find it distasteful; you are not on the team and it’s “easy” for you to dismiss). I’ve even posted on this board that it’s negative. But I don’t feel the need to constantly take AAC apologists to task (as I feel, and maybe I’m wrong) that you do. Nor would I feel any need to hammer on homer Iowa State fans. Or homer Big 12 fans. It almost seems as if some AAC fans have personally disrespected you based on a handful of your posts. That’s just odd.

4. Like you, I do not like the use of the term “cartel.” Any reasonable college sports fan understands the reality and will not resort to such odd name calling. Obviously, a fan of a Group of Five athletic program would be thrilled to have that program be a member of the “cartel” and (were it) would probably no longer use that term — thus exposing that fan’s hypocrisy.

5. There is only one university for which I am fully passionate (academics, sports, cultural offerings, campus architecture, etc.) and it is a member of the SEC — and not the AAC.

6. I can see how some posters perceive you, on occasion, as presenting toward the AAC an on-line message board persona of a “you know what.”

7. To be fair, sometimes I could be a bit more critical with my posts about the AAC — and I know I can be a “you know what.”

Thank you for a very well thought out post. I am a bit hard on AAC fans and I will try to limit that to only cases where they insult the rest the of us.
