Quote:She has private sector experience in law, which is helpful when working in government.

First of all, the generic 'practice of law' many times has zero to do with governance, or with statutory law. Or with administrative law.

How is being a patent prosecutor 'helpful when working in government'?

How is being a personal injury attorney 'helpful when working in government'?

How is drafting and negotiating leases 'helpful when working in government'?

How does drafting LLC operating agreements end up 'helpful when working in government'?

How is estate planning 'helpful when working in government'?

How is forming foreign held subsidiaries to be an asset holder and reallocating income streams to foreign jurisdictions 'helpful when working in government'?

How is obtaining a plea bargain for meth dealers from a Class 2 felony to an A misdemeanor 'helpful when working in government'?

How is filing suit for a guy against his neighbor for the neighbor's throwing his dog's poop over the fence 'helpful when working in government'?

How is telling a bunch a illegal immigrants that, when apprehended, the first thing they should do is to claim asylum 'helpful when working in government'?

The list there is quite long, so a limited example set should suffice, I presume. The normal activities of a 'private sector attorney' afford no more 'help[] when working in government' than probably any other form of private vocational work.

Now, if you parlay the JD to a staff counsel on a legislative committee, or staff counsel/aide to a legislator, that may very well fit the bill you want to shoehorn everything into for Abrams' sake. But each of the two mentioned in this are arguably not 'private sector attorney' positions.

Your assumption that private legal work is this amazing entree into governance is just fairly wildly off the the mark, in my opinion.

So, let me reverse the question --- what about private legal practice do you think gives it such an amazing and unique predicate for being 'helpful when working in government'?
