"Dude" is technically male but has become more unisex.
Yes, the author was a woman. A vocal, hard left leaning woman. Not an objective observer.
Sometimes I find it quite impressive how quickly, and over what things, y’all will jump to the defense of each other.
I haven’t seen “dude” be used in a unisex manner since maybe Keenan and Kel sang about how everyone was a dude in the 90s. But if you’re still keeping that trend going, you do you, dude.

When I was coaching women's rugby, Texas State had this player known as "Dude." She was one big, strong, fast woman, and almost nobody could stop her. That was the first time I had heard it used to describe a female.

But I hear students use it to describe women all the time now. Not lately, of course, since we are quarantined, but many time before we were.
