But a lot of my lefty friends are just totally into talking for hours about a movie. The acting was great, the plot was weak, the directing was so-so, the special effects were decent, the music sucked, on and on and on. It's almost incestuous how lefties get engrossed in moves and the vast majority of the movie industry is engrossed in leftism. It's kind of symbiotic.

Frankly, if the plot doesn't hold my attention, very little else matters to me about a movie.

I agree: plot matters. Most plots just aren't very good, which makes most movies not very good. Great special effects or "action" scenes with a dumb plot make a dumb movie. In contrast, a great plot with no special effects, no "action", and no clever cinematography (or even with somewhat wooden acting or stilted dialogue) can make a great movie (The Caine Mutiny, Twelve Angry Men, The Shawshank Redemption are just a few that come to mind).

As for links between movie fandom and politics: it seems to me also that most people I know who really like movies are leftists. But then again, most people I know are leftists, so I'm hesitant to draw a conclusion.

On the other hand, it seems to me that being an avid reader of non-fiction seems to correlate well with NOT being a leftist.

Avid reader of what?

There can be a very strong dichotomy between periodicals and 'books' as to what people read.

I have seemingly noticed a somewhat decent correlation between readers of science fiction (more than 4 scifi books a year) and libertarianism.
