Clever. I was thinking it was ironic because it happened on the OKlahoma campus, which uses the song Boomer Sooner.

I guess this is one of those times when speech is limited de facto.

But I also find it to be a problem that certain words cannot be used by people of certain colors or ethnicity, in any context including an academic discussion. It's not as if he directed the word at a student.

personally I find "OK Boomer" to be only mildly offensive, similar to "Shut up, old man". I certainly would not agitate for the firing of a professor who used it, or the dismissal of a student who said it. I would probably respond "OK Lemming" to a user.

I referenced Power. That is a show where you can hear the N-world 50-100 times an hour. It is a show produced, directed, and run by black people, with a 90% black cast. But even some of the white characters use it. The black writers put it in the dialogue for the white characters.

The uproar is not over the use of the term "Boomer," by the way.

And the sun rises in the East. By the way.

Nobody ever said or intimated that it was about OKB, except you.

The n-word was compared to OK Boomer in the discussion - at least the discussion that snapped closed, finis, la la la I can't hear you on the introduction of the n-word.

I was a bit confused by the bolded text above.

But for the record, speech is never free of consequence. The professor has done a good job coming out and apologizing after the fact, as the terms are nearly incomparable. I'm hoping that the students and the admin accept the mea culpas and move on.

You are easily confused.

I agree the terms are nearly incomparable. He did a bad job of using that example. But the calls for his firing/resignation are not based on his poor job in class. they are 100% based on him using that word in any context at any time. he is not on the list of people approved to use that word.
Ever.

This guy has been there 22 years, and holds an endowed chair. He probably will not be banished to bluecollarland as if he was a mere lecturer who did the exact same thing. But I do think the students are making too big a deal about this. It's like they cannot differentiate between a guy in a pointy white sheet and a professor making a point. The are both white, otherwise there are no points of commonality.
